Understanding Your Options
Article 2 of 12
When it comes to reducing stubborn fat that does not respond to diet or exercise, two options come up most often: liposuction and fat dissolving injections. They work very differently, suit different situations, and carry very different levels of risk and recovery. This article sets out what each one actually involves so you can have a better informed conversation about which direction makes sense for you.
If you have not already, you may find it useful to read the first article in the Beneath the Surface series: Fat Dissolving Injections, where I explain how these treatments work and who they suit best.
What Each Treatment Actually Does
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that physically removes fat from the body through suction. It requires incisions and is performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the area and volume being treated. The results are immediate because fat cells are extracted directly.
Fat dissolving injections use a compound called deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the body and is involved in breaking down dietary fat. When injected into a targeted fat deposit, it disrupts the fat cell membrane. The body then clears the damaged cells gradually over several weeks, reducing the treated area progressively.
Invasiveness and What the Procedure Involves
Liposuction involves surgery. That means incisions, anaesthesia, and the clinical infrastructure to support both safely. It is not a minor undertaking, and the risks associated with any invasive procedure apply, including infection, uneven contouring, and reactions to anaesthesia.
Fat dissolving injections are delivered through fine needles directly into the fat layer. There are no incisions, no stitches, and no general anaesthesia involved. For the right candidate, it is a straightforward in-clinic procedure that can be completed in a single appointment.
Downtime and Recovery
Recovery after liposuction typically involves several days to a few weeks of downtime. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common in the treated areas, and you are generally advised to avoid strenuous activity until healing progresses. The timeline varies depending on the volume treated and individual healing.
Fat dissolving injections have minimal downtime by comparison. Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection site can last a few days but most people return to their normal routine almost immediately. The treated area will continue to change gradually in the weeks following each session as the body processes the disrupted fat cells.
Cost and Number of Sessions
Liposuction carries a higher upfront cost, reflecting the surgical setting, surgeon fees, anaesthesia, and aftercare involved. For larger fat volumes, it may still represent better value per centimetre of result than a non-surgical alternative.
Fat dissolving injections are more affordable per session, though a course of two to six sessions spaced several weeks apart is typically needed to achieve meaningful contouring. The overall cost is generally lower than surgery, but it is worth discussing realistic expectations at consultation so you understand the likely number of sessions for your specific area.
Which Situations Each Treatment Suits
Liposuction is better suited to removing larger volumes of fat and producing more immediate, dramatic contouring. It remains the gold standard for significant body reshaping where non-surgical options would fall short. It is worth noting that surgical procedures are not something I offer at Dr Alluris Aesthetics. If liposuction is the most appropriate route for your goals, I will say so clearly and point you toward the right specialist.
Fat dissolving injections work best for smaller, well-defined areas of localised fat that resist lifestyle changes. Common treatment areas include under the chin, the inner arms, the lower abdomen, and the waist. They are not a weight loss solution and are not intended for significant fat reduction across large body areas.
A Note on Safety and Suitability
Both options carry risks that need careful consideration. For liposuction, a thorough surgical assessment is essential. For fat dissolving injections, suitability depends on the size and location of the fat deposit, your medical history, skin quality, and your expectations of the result.
I approach every consultation with the same principles I carried over from neurosurgery: honest assessment, clear explanation, and no recommendation I cannot justify clinically. If fat dissolving injections are not the right fit for your situation, I will tell you, and we will explore what might work better.
