If you are considering fat dissolving injections for the first time, the most common questions I hear are about swelling, discomfort, how many sessions are needed, and what the result actually looks like. This article answers all of those honestly and in order, from your initial consultation through to the final outcome.

If you have not already read the earlier articles in this series, these provide useful background before going further:

What Fat Dissolving Injections Actually Do

Fat dissolving injections are a non-surgical treatment for reducing localised fat deposits in small, defined areas. The active compound, most commonly deoxycholic acid, targets and disrupts fat cell membranes. Once those cells are broken down, the body clears the released fat naturally over several weeks.

This treatment is designed for targeted contouring, not significant fat reduction or weight loss. Common areas include under the chin, the inner arms, the lower abdomen, and the waist. It is not appropriate for everyone, and suitability depends on the size and location of the fat deposit, your skin quality, your medical history, and your expectations of the result. All of this is assessed at consultation before anything is planned.

Before Your First Session

The consultation is the starting point. I carry out a thorough review of your medical history and examine the area you want to treat. This is not a formality. It is the step that determines whether the treatment is appropriate for you, how many sessions are likely to be needed, and what a realistic outcome looks like for your specific anatomy.

Most courses involve two to four sessions spaced several weeks apart to allow the body time to respond between treatments. I will explain this clearly at consultation so you have a full picture before committing to anything.

In the days before your first session, you will be advised to avoid medications and supplements that can increase bleeding or bruising risk, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and high-dose fish oil, unless they are medically necessary. I will go through this with you in detail at consultation and in your pre-treatment instructions.

During the Treatment Session

Each session typically takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area being treated. The skin is cleansed and the injection points are marked carefully based on the treatment plan we have agreed. A topical anaesthetic can be applied if needed for comfort, and the solution is administered using fine needles into the fat layer beneath the skin.

Some people describe a brief stinging or burning sensation during the injections. This is normal and settles quickly. Mild swelling, redness, and warmth in the treated area are immediate and expected responses. They are signs that the treatment is working, not signs that something has gone wrong.

After Treatment: The Recovery Timeline

Swelling is the most noticeable post-treatment effect. It typically peaks within the first 48 to 72 hours and then gradually reduces over one to two weeks. Bruising and tenderness are also common and resolve within a similar timeframe.

In the days following each session, I recommend:

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for 48 to 72 hours
  • Avoiding excessive heat, including saunas and steam rooms, for a few days
  • Staying well hydrated to support the body's natural clearance process
  • Applying a cold compress gently if swelling is uncomfortable
  • Following any additional aftercare instructions specific to your treated area

If swelling persists beyond two weeks, feels unusually firm, or you notice any symptoms that concern you, contact me directly. Prompt communication is always the right approach if something does not feel right.

When to Expect Results

Fat dissolving injections do not produce an immediate visible result. The body requires time to process and eliminate the disrupted fat cells, and this happens gradually over several weeks after each session.

Most people begin to notice a subtle change in the treated area from around three to four weeks after a session. The clearest results are generally visible once the full course of sessions is complete and the body has had time to finish clearing the treated cells. For most people this means the final result is visible two to three months after the last session, though this varies between individuals.

I review progress between sessions and adjust the plan if needed. The goal is always a natural-looking, proportionate result, not the most dramatic change achievable in the fewest appointments.

Common Questions I Hear

Is the swelling normal or a sign of a complication? Swelling is a completely expected part of the process and should not be mistaken for an adverse reaction. It is the body responding to the treatment as intended. Swelling that is unusually prolonged, asymmetric, or accompanied by other symptoms warrants a check-in.

How many sessions will I need? This depends on the area and the amount of localised fat present. Two sessions is typical for smaller areas like under the chin. More defined or larger deposits may need three to four. I give you a realistic estimate at consultation based on what I see, not a minimum number designed to get you through the door.

Will the fat come back? The fat cells that are successfully treated are permanently disrupted and cleared by the body. They do not regenerate. However, significant weight gain after treatment can cause remaining fat cells in surrounding areas to enlarge, which is why this treatment works best when your weight is reasonably stable.

A Simple Next Step

If you are curious whether fat dissolving injections are appropriate for your goals, the most useful thing to do is have a conversation. A consultation gives you a clear, honest picture of what is realistic for your anatomy, how many sessions you are likely to need, and what the process will actually involve.
