Exosomes in Aesthetic Medicine: The New Frontier

Exosomes have quickly become one of the most promising treatments in the world of regenerative aesthetics. At Dr Alluris Aesthetics, I am pleased to announce that I will soon be offering exosome treatments as part of our range of advanced skin and hair restoration options.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny, naturally occurring messenger particles that carry a rich payload of growth factors, cytokines, and other cellular signals. They work by ‘instructing’ skin or hair follicle cells to repair, regenerate, and renew themselves — making them ideal for treating ageing skin, acne scars, and thinning hair.

Sources of Exosomes: Human, Plant, and Microorganism-Derived

Exosomes can be derived from different sources, each with unique benefits:

  • Human-Derived Exosomes:
Sourced from stem or placental tissue, these exosomes carry potent growth factors and cellular signals making them highly effective for deep skin regeneration and long‑term improvements.
  • Plant-Derived Exosomes:
Extracted from plants, these exosomes are rich in antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory properties. They support skin barrier health and hydration, making them ideal for sensitive or reactive skin.
  • Microorganism-Derived Exosomes (e.g., ExoBooster):
Created from beneficial microorganisms, these exosomes offer precise, targeted cellular messaging. They’re gaining interest for their ability to fine‑tune treatments for specific concerns such as acne scarring or hyperpigmentation. Importantly, these treatments are developed in highly regulated environments, making them safe and reliable for clinical use.

The Treatment Process: What to Expect

Exosome treatments can be administered in one of three ways:
✅ Topical Application (often combined with microneedling or mesotherapy for deeper penetration)
✅ Microneedling/Injection Techniques (allowing exosomes to penetrate more deeply and stimulate collagen and elastin production)
✅ Direct Injections (using fine needles for precision treatments in areas of concern)

The treatment itself is minimally invasive, usually taking 30–45 minutes, with only mild discomfort and minimal downtime (some mild redness or swelling can occur for 24–48 hours).

Timeframe of Results

Exosomes work at a cellular level, so early improvements can be noticeable within 1–2 weeks — brighter, smoother, and more hydrated skin is common.
More significant collagen and tissue benefits typically become evident after 4–6 weeks, with long‑term improvements lasting up to 3–6 months as cellular regeneration takes effect.

Treatment Protocol

For best results, we typically recommend a course of 3–4 treatments, spaced roughly 4 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments can be performed every 6–12 months, depending on individual needs and treatment goals.

Exosomes vs PRP

While PRP relies on extracting platelets and growth factors from your own blood, exosomes can be sourced from human, plant, or microorganism‑derived sources. This allows for:

✅ Greater precision and higher concentrations of cellular messengers
✅ Reduced invasiveness (no blood draw required)
✅ Tailored treatments for specific concerns

Importantly, autologous PRP remains an excellent option for patients seeking a fully natural approach, while exosomes can offer enhanced benefits for targeted treatments, especially when dealing with challenging conditions such as acne scarring, hair loss, or deep skin ageing.
