Article 8 of 12
Exosome therapy is one of the most scientifically interesting developments in regenerative aesthetics in recent years. It moves beyond simply adding volume or relaxing muscle and works instead at the cellular level, delivering biological signals that instruct your skin and scalp tissue to repair, regenerate, and renew themselves. I offer exosome treatments at Dr Alluris Aesthetics for both facial skin rejuvenation and scalp treatment for hair thinning, and this article explains clearly what they are, how they work, and what you can realistically expect.
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles, tiny particles produced naturally by cells as a means of communicating with one another. They carry a payload of growth factors, peptides, cytokines, and messenger molecules that instruct recipient cells to behave in specific ways, repairing damage, producing collagen and elastin, improving hydration, and accelerating cellular renewal.
In an aesthetic context, exosome preparations are applied or injected into the skin or scalp, where they deliver those concentrated biological signals to the cells that need them most. The result is a regenerative response driven by your own tissue rather than by an externally added substance.
The exosome preparations I use at Dr Alluris Aesthetics are not derived from human blood or human stem cells. They are laboratory-produced from non-human sources, manufactured under tightly controlled conditions to deliver a standardised and highly concentrated payload of growth factors and signalling molecules with every treatment.
This matters clinically. Unlike autologous treatments that rely on processing a client's own biological material, the preparations I use deliver a consistent and reproducible dose regardless of the individual's own biology. There is no variability from person to person, no blood draw required, and no centrifuge process involved. The result is a more predictable and precisely dosed regenerative effect.
Exosomes used in aesthetic medicine can originate from several non-human source categories, each with a distinct mechanism and application focus:
The specific preparation used in your treatment is selected based on your skin concerns, skin type, and the goals we agree at consultation.
Exosomes can be delivered in more than one way depending on the treatment area and the depth of effect required.
For facial skin rejuvenation, I most commonly use exosomes in combination with DrPen microneedling. The micro-channels created during a microneedling session allow the exosome preparation to penetrate to the deeper dermal layers where it has the most meaningful biological effect. This combination consistently produces a stronger result than either treatment alone and is one of the most evidence-supported approaches currently available for non-surgical skin renewal.
For scalp treatment in hair thinning, exosomes can be delivered by direct injection into the scalp or applied topically in conjunction with scalp microneedling. The growth factor payload supports follicle activity, improves microcirculation in the scalp, and creates a more favourable tissue environment around thinning follicles.
Each session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Mild redness or swelling for 24 to 48 hours after treatment is a normal response and settles quickly. Most people return to their usual routine the same day or the following morning.
Exosomes work at a cellular level, so the response unfolds progressively rather than appearing immediately. Early improvements in skin brightness, hydration, and smoothness are often noticeable within one to two weeks of the first session. More significant collagen and tissue benefits become evident from around four to six weeks, with continued improvement developing over the months that follow as the regenerative processes initiated by treatment run their course.
A course of three to four sessions spaced approximately four weeks apart is standard for most concerns. Maintenance treatment every six to twelve months supports and extends the results, though the right interval depends on how your skin responds and what we are working toward together.
Exosome therapy is not a volumising treatment and will not replicate the structural effect of a dermal filler or PLLA. It works by improving the quality, health, and regenerative capacity of existing tissue. For many clients, that is exactly what is needed, either on its own or as a complement to other injectable treatments.
If you are weighing up exosome therapy against polynucleotide injections, or wondering where each fits within a broader treatment plan, the dedicated comparison article covers this in detail:
If exosome therapy sounds relevant to your skin or scalp concerns, a consultation is the right starting point. I will assess your skin properly, explain which approach and delivery method I think is appropriate for your situation, and give you a realistic picture of what a course of treatment would involve and what you might expect from it.
